How to read the chart

Find the move type’s row and the defending type’s column. Their intersection gives the multiplier.

FireGrass2×

Fire-type moves against Grass-type Pokémon: 2× type effectiveness.

ElectricGround0×

Electric-type moves against Ground-type Pokémon: 0× type effectiveness.

Type weaknesses at a glance

How dual types change the result

Look up each defending type separately, then multiply the two damage multipliers. A weakness and resistance can cancel out; an immunity always makes the result 0×.

Rock

Defending Pokémon: Fire / Flying

2 × 2 = 4×

Grass

Defending Pokémon: Fire / Flying

½ × ½ = ¼×

Ice

Defending Pokémon: Fire / Flying

½ × 2 = 1×

Electric

Defending Pokémon: Water / Ground

2 × 0 = 0×

Attacking and defending are different

Use the move’s type to check an attack, and the target’s type to check its defense. The chart is not symmetrical: Fire moves deal 2× damage to Grass, while Grass moves deal ½× damage to Fire.

Frequently asked questions

Do I use the Pokémon’s type or the move’s type?

Use the move’s type for the attacking row, and the target Pokémon’s type for the defending column.

Does this chart include STAB?

The chart shows type effectiveness only. STAB, the bonus for using a move that matches the Pokémon’s type, is a separate damage modifier.

Can abilities change the result?

Yes. For example, Electric types are normally weak to Ground moves, but Levitate prevents damage from Ground moves in ordinary conditions. Abilities, items and battle effects are separate from the base chart.

Does the order of two types matter?

No. For base type effectiveness, multiply both matchups; exchanging the two defending types gives the same result.

Does this work in every Pokémon game?

This chart covers the standard main-series matchups from Generation VI onward. Earlier generations and special game rules can differ. Stellar and Terastallization effects are not calculated here.
