What Does Illuminate Do in Pokémon?
Compare Illuminate’s encounter and battle effects, the Scarlet and Violet version change, and eight Poke Wordle candidates. Learn why accuracy protection does not guarantee a hit.
Illuminate changed: check the game first
Illuminate helps with wild encounters in older games, but protects accuracy in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet from version 2.0.1 onward. Its battle effect stops other Pokémon from lowering the holder’s accuracy stat stage and ignores the target’s evasion stages. That does not make every move hit: a move’s own accuracy and effects such as Sand Veil still matter.
This guide separates those mechanics from the Ability clue in Poke Wordle. The same name can identify a candidate Pokémon here without recreating its effect in a particular adventure.
| Games or version | In battle | Outside battle or version note |
|---|---|---|
| Applicable main-series games in generations III–VII | No battle effect | A Pokémon with Illuminate at the front of the party increases wild encounters |
| Sword and Shield | No battle effect | Affects random encounters, not the number of all visible Pokémon |
| Scarlet and Violet before 2.0.1 | No battle effect | The description changed in 1.3.2, before any Illuminate holder was available |
| Scarlet and Violet from 2.0.1 | Protects accuracy stages; ignores the target’s evasion stages | Do not assume the older encounter bonus carries over |
The distinction between the 1.3.2 description change and 2.0.1 effect change is documented by Bulbapedia. An older guide saying “no battle effect” can be correct for its game and still be unsuitable for a current Scarlet or Violet battle. The table covers the games named here, rather than every remake or spin-off.
Why does accuracy protection not guarantee a hit?
Think of a move’s accuracy as having several inputs. Illuminate deals with particular stat-stage adjustments, rather than replacing the entire hit check.
| Situation, while Illuminate is active and not bypassed | What follows |
|---|---|
| Another Pokémon tries to lower the holder’s accuracy stage | That reduction is prevented |
| The target has raised its evasion stage | That stage increase does not help it evade this holder’s move |
| A move has less than 100 base accuracy | Illuminate alone does not turn that number into 100 |
| Sand Veil affects the hit check without changing stages | Illuminate does not remove that effect |
For example, removing an opponent’s evasion advantage is useful, but it does not repair an inherently inaccurate move. Check the move and the battle conditions as well as the Ability; Serebii’s Illuminate entry also distinguishes the battle effect from its older field use.
What did the older encounter effect do?
In the applicable older games, party position matters: put the Pokémon with Illuminate first. Having an eligible species elsewhere in the party is not the stated condition, and that individual must actually have Illuminate.
Encounter methods also matter. Sword and Shield’s random encounters are different from Pokémon already visible in the overworld. “More encounters” should not be read as “twice as many visible spawns” or as a better Shiny chance per encounter. For Scarlet and Violet, do not reuse the older bonus as an established hunting method; descriptions of its generation IX field effect still require care.
Which Illuminate Pokémon are in Poke Wordle?
These eight entries currently have Illuminate among their available Abilities on this site. This is a candidate comparison table, not a promise that every species is obtainable in every game.
| Pokémon | Types | Generation | Base stat total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Staryu | Water | 1 | 340 |
| Starmie | Water, Psychic | 1 | 520 |
| Chinchou | Water, Electric | 2 | 330 |
| Lanturn | Water, Electric | 2 | 460 |
| Volbeat | Bug | 3 | 430 |
| Watchog | Normal | 5 | 420 |
| Morelull | Grass, Fairy | 7 | 285 |
| Shiinotic | Grass, Fairy | 7 | 405 |
A green Illuminate clue: Chinchou or Lanturn?
Suppose the answer is Lanturn and you guess Chinchou in Poke Wordle, with generation II enabled and the relevant columns visible. Here is what the clues tell you:
| Chinchou’s clue | Feedback against Lanturn | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Water and Electric | Both green | Both types match |
| Generation 2 | Green | They debuted in the same generation |
| Illuminate, Volt Absorb, Water Absorb | All green | The two entries share all three available Ability names |
| Base stat total 330 | Gray, upward arrow | Lanturn has 460: a difference of 130 |
| First stage | Different | Lanturn is a second-stage entry |
The Ability column lists possible Abilities for an entry; it does not give one individual three active Abilities. Even all three green labels do not identify the answer. Here the higher total and different evolution stage separate two otherwise similar candidates. See the colors and arrows guide for reading the remaining feedback.
Selecting generation II changes the eligible entries, not the historical battle rules. It does not turn the puzzle into Gold or Silver or remove Ability clues because those games predate Abilities. The generation settings guide explains the filter. Illuminate itself changes neither answer selection nor your odds of winning this puzzle.
